I love that she starts long hand. Other creative people like artists and musicians warm up before practicing their craft. No one ever talks about writers warming up–it’s just ass-in-chair. (For the record, I warm up.)

And can I just say, that mastering plot structure works wonders? Because it totally does.

Mary Sue came from Star Trek fanfiction. There was actually a character called Mary Sue and she was exactly that. One of the male equivalents is Gary Stu.
