Hey folks! We’re back this week with an another all new live episode of the Self Publishing Roundtable. 
Join in this Thursday as Wade, Xavier and Liam welcome Erica Conroy to the panel, who will be filling in for Michelle while she is away, as well as special returning guest, John L. Monk, author of the Jenkins Cycle Series.
We had John on the show back in July, but unfortunately Wade was out of the picture that week. So, we decided to invite John back, and we’re all looking forward to the discussion!

If someone like Courtney Milan or Delilah Marveille were to go to write scifi… they would change their names for SciFi because their fans would be confused. In fact, I think Delilah said she was looking to branch out into Science Fiction. :/ BUT she has already told her mailing lists that she’s doing it so some of us are ready to see what she does.

Na. I like to read 1 to 2 sci-fi top 100 books a week. It keeps me in the game on the market, plus I love it, and most importantly – gets me my 9.99 worth on KU.
Romance snob? There are some really good indie romance writers

Carl Sinclair I still do it myself in Scrivener. One day I’ll have a paperback though and will have to look into formatting 🙂

JayneFury it’s something I do on one of my book series, I find it’s also a cheater’s way to summarise the previous episode while introducing that book.
BatmanErica JayneFury Ugh. I can see why that would be handy, but I hate a bunch of stuff in the front matter. If I open a sample and there is anything but story I skip it. Especially those books that have like 90% of the sample being sign up lists etc.
I think Sixth Cycle goes directly to Chapter 1. I think that sample is KEY on getting the reader to read.
BatmanErica Carl Sinclair I can do the ebooks myself in Scrivener, but these guys just do it all, super fast, super high quality and super cheap. Plus paperbacks are super not cool to do!

SFRB we were discussing going wide. One of the authors said how she has multiple streams because she doesn’t want to piss off her audience by going only to KDP.
JayneFury I think that’s only something you have to worry about if you started wide and then went Amazon exclusive to take advantage of KU. If you’re new and you go Amazon exclusive first, you’re not going to piss off many people
BatmanErica JayneFury I think all NEW authors should go Select and build up there for around 6 to 12 months. Then once select starts drying up it MIGHT be good to try out some of the others. But remember you have to work a lot harder to get anywhere on those platforms than you do on Amazon.

BatmanErica Carl Sinclair JayneFury Exactly. You can quite easily get yourself a massive push up the charts on Amazon every 3 months with a countdown and cluster of ads. Much harder to do that elsewhere and stick. Sticking is the key.
I’m torn on paperbacks for indies too. I like them for me, but I sell about 1 every 1000 e book copies. I guess it’s a ‘nice to have’ thing.
Carl Sinclair and you won’t get into the Amazon Book shop. Reports from those who visited have said it’s all the bigger names, mostly those who are hybrid
